The Dark Forest biome is a dense forested region in the Overworld of Minecraft, characterized by its thick canopy of trees that significantly reduce skylight intrusion, creating a darker, more foreboding atmosphere than standard forest biomes.
This biome is especially notable because:

  • It is the only natural biome in which dark oak trees generate.
  • It is one of the exclusive biomes where the rare structure Woodland Mansion appears.
Because of the dense tree cover, hostile mobs can sometimes spawn even during the daytime beneath the canopy.

Biome data (Java Edition)

  • Temperature: 0.7
  • Downfall: 0.8
  • Grass colour: #507A32
  • Foliage colour: #59AE30

Location and Generation

Typical generation

The Dark Forest biome generally generates in humid, temperate regions of the Overworld, often adjacent to or bordering biomes such as Birch Forest and Old Growth Taiga.

Because of its high humidity, it is almost guaranteed that below it lush caves may generate (in versions where lush cave biomes can appear).

Variant: Dark Forest Hills

There exists a variant known as the Dark Forest Hills (formerly “roofed forest hills” in older versions), which features increased terrain fluctuation (hills and ridges) while maintaining dark oak trees and mushrooms.

Note: Starting in version 1.18 this variant is no longer separated as a unique biome but treated as part of the Dark Forest biome.

Biome ID / naming

  • Java Edition: minecraft:dark_forest
  • Legacy/Bedrock: formerly called “Roofed Forest” in some editions.

Rarity

The Dark Forest appears at moderate rarity. One older statistical breakdown lists Dark Forest at approx. 2.89% among biomes in one sample.

Blocks and Flora

Trees and vegetation

  • Dark Oak Trees: The signature tree of this biome. It has a thick 2×2 trunk and elaborate branching structure, and spawns naturally only in this biome.
  • Oak and occasionally Birch trees may also appear in this biome (but dark oak dominates).
  • Huge mushrooms (both red and brown) generate on the forest floor, often beneath the covering canopy. The red mushroom is more common.

Ground cover and blocks

  • Standard grass blocks, tall grass, flowers (such as lilacs and poppies) appear, generally near the biome edge.
  • Because skylight is often blocked by the dense canopy, surface-level lighting is lower, increasing mob-spawn risk.
  • Beehives do not generate on dark oak trees in this biome (unlike some other forest biomes).

Visual / aesthetic details

  • The enclosed canopy and darker light create a unique feel compared to open forest biomes — useful for thematic builds (see section 8).
  • The grass and foliage colours listed (see Overview) help map-makers and texture-pack users maintain consistent visuals.

Mobs and Wildlife

Passive & friendly mobs

Typical passive mobs (sheep, pigs, cows, chickens) spawn in the Dark Forest, but less frequently than in open forests due to tree cover and lower light levels.

Note: Wolves do not spawn naturally in this biome (even though they spawn in other forests).

Hostile mobs

Because of the reduced light under the canopy, hostile mobs can spawn even during the day in shaded spots.
A spawn-table summary for Java Edition (surface/near-surface) is as follows:

MobSpawn weightGroup size
Creeper100⁄5154
Skeleton100⁄5154
Slime*100⁄5154
Spider100⁄5154
Zombie95⁄5154
Enderman10⁄5151-4
Witch5⁄5151
Zombie Villager5⁄5151

*Slimes spawn only in slime chunks.
Ambient mobs: Bat (1 weight, group size 8)
Creature (passive) category: Sheep (12⁄40,4), Chicken (10⁄40,4), Pig (10⁄40,4), Cow (8⁄40,4) among others.
Bedrock Edition has similar but distinct weights.

Structure-related mobs: Woodland Mansion

When exploring the Woodland Mansion (see section 5), you may encounter specialized mobs: Vindicators, Evokers, Vexes (spawn via Evoker), etc. These mobs are highly dangerous and tied to that structure.

Woodland Mansion

Description and rarity

The Woodland Mansion is a rare large structure that generates only within Dark Forest biomes (or the relevant variant) in the Overworld.

It typically generates beneath the dense canopy and may cover a large area (multiple floors, many rooms).

Locating the mansion

  • In Java Edition you can use /locate structure woodland_mansion (or similar) to find its coordinates.
  • Alternatively, purchase a Woodland Explorer Map from a Cartographer villager and use that to navigate.
  • Because the Dark Forest biome is relatively rare and trees dense, exploring via map or commands is advised.

Structure layout and features

  • The mansion contains many rooms—some standard, others hidden or secret.
  • Inside you will find loot chests, special blocks (bookshelves, etc), and unique mobs (Illagers).

Dangers and rewards

Dangers:

  • Vindicators wield axes and deal heavy melee damage.
  • Evokers cast spells and summon Vexes; Evokers drop a Totem of Undying.
  • Vexes are flying, hard to target.
Poor lighting and complex layout make the mansion high-risk.
    Rewards:
  • Totem of Undying from Evoker – extremely valuable for surviving a death.
  • Emeralds, enchanted books, rare loot from chests.
  • Large quantities of dark oak wood nearby and huge mushrooms for harvesting.

Exploration tips

  • Enter with full gear (at least iron/diamond armour), shield, ranged weapon.
  • Light up corridors immediately to reduce surprise spawns.
  • Clear room by room, marking cleared areas to avoid getting lost.
  • Use the Totem of Undying strategically—save it until a major threat.
  • Harvest resources as you go (bookshelves, wood) and retreat if overwhelmed.

Loot and Resources

Wood & building materials

  • Dark oak wood is plentiful in the Dark Forest biome, making it a highly renewable resource for building.
  • Huge mushrooms yield mushroom blocks and mushrooms useful for crafting stew or decorative builds.
  • Because dark oak is exclusive to this biome, many players seek it specifically for builds.

Unique drops from structure

  • Totem of Undying (Evoker drop) – gives one extra life, very valuable.
  • Chests in Woodland Mansion: emeralds, enchanted books, rare blocks.
  • Large supply of dark oak logs and leaves from the surrounding biome.

Survival-resource note

While harvesting is generous, the increased mob spawn risk means you should treat resource gathering with caution—ensure lighting, safe cutting zones, and watch your back.

Survival and Exploration Tips

Lighting & base considerations

  • Because the canopy blocks much skylight, place torches or other light sources liberally when on the forest floor to prevent mob spawning.
  • For a safer base, consider building a treehouse above the canopy—the elevated vantage gives better visibility and fewer spawns at ground-level.
  • Alternatively, clear a small patch of ground, remove the trees, and build a ground-base with perimeter lighting and walls.

Gear & equipment

  • Recommended: at least iron armour (preferably diamond/netherite if late game), shield, bow or crossbow, plenty of food.
  • Bring blocks or ladders: navigating between trunks, climbing to canopy, or escaping mobs may require extra mobility.
  • For mansion hunts: bring lootsack (for emeralds/books), map/compass, spare torches, maybe potions.

Tree-farming strategy

  • When harvesting dark oak logs: mine from outer trees to maintain escape routes.
  • Be aware that mobs may spawn beneath leaves and giant mushrooms—keep your environment lit and safe.
  • Because dark oak saplings require 2×2 planting, consider clearing a 2×2 patch and replant for an efficient farm.

Exploring the mansion

  • Use the map to approach at daytime (so you arrive when lighting is better).
  • Start by lighting the first floor before descending.
  • Use ranged attacks for mobs high up (Evoker, Vex).
  • After clearing a room, mark it (e.g., place a torch in a conspicuous location) to avoid back-tracking into unexplored areas.

Avoiding fires

Note: Dark oak trees are highly flammable, and the dense forest can quickly catch and spread fire. If using fire to clear land, proceed cautiously—large uncontrolled fires may destroy useful resources or trap you.

Build & Creative Tips

  • Because of its uniquely dark ambiance and tree-top canopy, the Dark Forest biome is a popular choice for haunted woodstreehousesgothic builds, or mystic forest themes.
  • Use the tall dark oak trunks and giant mushrooms as decorative focal points.
  • For map-makers: leverage the grass and foliage colours (#507A32, #59AE30) and dense lighting environment to craft atmospheric scenes (fog, mysterious structures).
  • The height variation and enclosed nature make it ideal for tree-bridge networkscanopy villages, or underground caverns accessed from beneath the mushrooms.

History & Trivia

  • The biome was originally called “Roofed Forest” in older versions of Minecraft (prior to renaming).
  • The “Dark Forest Hills” variant was merged into the main Dark Forest biome in version 1.18.
  • Because of its dense canopy and low light, the Dark Forest is one of the few biomes where players commonly witnessed hostile mobs spawning during daytime (pre-1.18 spawn rule changes).
  • Many players build “haunted forest” adventure maps in this biome thanks to its visual ambience and structural rarity (Woodland Mansion).
  • Dark oak trees always generate with a dirt block beneath their trunk, even if spawning over air or water.
