Updated for Java Edition 26.3 (October 2026).
The snowy taiga is a cold Overworld spruce forest where it always snows, the ground stays white and the water freezes over. It is the home of the ashen wolf, white snow foxes and white rabbits, and one of the few biomes with igloos. In our sample of 300 Java 26.3 seeds it covered about 2% of the surface.
| Dimension | Overworld |
|---|---|
| Where it generates | Cold lowland, usually along frozen rivers and next to snowy plains and regular taiga |
| How common | 2.2% of the surface in our sample (about 1 block in 45); present in 299 of 300 seeds |
| Distance from spawn | Median 1,577 blocks; within 1,000 blocks in 33% of seeds, within 2,000 in 59%, within 5,000 in 98% (our sample) |
| Mobs | Wolves (the ashen variant), snow foxes, white rabbits, sheep, pigs, cows and chickens, plus the usual hostile mobs at night |
| Notable blocks | Spruce trees, snow layers, ice on still water, ferns and large ferns, sweet berry bushes (rare), pumpkins |
| Structures | Igloos, trail ruins, abandoned camps (26.3), ruined portals; no villages or pillager outposts on Java |
| Climate | Temperature -0.5, downfall 0.4; snow instead of rain at every height |
| Biome ID | minecraft:snowy_taiga |
| Added in | Java Edition 1.7 as Cold Taiga; renamed Snowy Taiga in 1.13 |
How to find a snowy taiga
Follow the ice. In our sample, a snowy taiga’s edge touched a frozen river 41% of the time, snowy plains 17%, taiga 12%, grove 9% and snowy beach 8%. If you are in a green spruce taiga, walk toward the colder side until the grass turns white. On open snowy plains, look for the dark line of spruce trees along a frozen river.
It is not usually next door. The median distance from spawn to the nearest snowy taiga was 1,577 blocks, and only a third of seeds had one within 1,000 blocks. Plan for a trip, or use one of the seeds below.

These three Java 26.3 seeds start you in or right next to a snowy taiga. Each coordinate is inside the biome, checked at block level.
| Seed | Snowy taiga at | From spawn | Map |
|---|---|---|---|
3880097239890914404 |
X -98, Z -38 | 15 blocks | Open on the map |
2546873176684604958 |
X 386, Z -366 | 106 blocks | Open on the map |
5171982298289604722 |
X -290, Z 34 | 46 blocks | Open on the map |
In a world you already have, /locate biome minecraft:snowy_taiga (cheats on) gives the nearest one, or paste your seed into the biome finder. These are Java seeds; the same number on Bedrock gives a different world.
Snowy taiga vs taiga
The trees are the same spruce, but the two biomes play differently. The snowy version is colder, rarer near spawn, and has no villages:
| Feature | Snowy taiga | Taiga |
|---|---|---|
| Weather | Snow, water freezes | Rain |
| Wolf variant | Ashen | Pale |
| Foxes and rabbits | White snow foxes, white rabbits | Red foxes, brown and other rabbit colors |
| Sweet berry bushes | Rare | Common |
| Villages and outposts | None | Taiga villages and pillager outposts |
| Igloos | Yes | No |
| How common (our sample) | 2.2% of the surface | 3.3% of the surface |
| Median distance from spawn (our sample) | 1,577 blocks | 658 blocks |
So if you want a snowy village, a snowy taiga is the wrong place on Java: snowy villages generate only in snowy plains. Since the two biomes border each other often, check the snowy plains next door.
Animals in the snowy taiga
Wolves spawn in packs, and here they are the ashen variant, a grey and white wolf you won’t find in other biomes. Tame one with bones; tamed wolves keep their variant. Foxes spawn as the white snow fox and rabbits are white, both blending into the snow. Foxes sleep during the day and run from you, so sneak up on them, and note that a fox can spawn holding an item in its mouth.
Sheep, pigs, cows and chickens spawn here too. Since Java 1.21.5 the farm animals are the cold variants, and sheep are most often black. The hostile mobs at night are the standard set (zombies, skeletons, spiders, creepers, endermen and witches). Strays do not spawn naturally in the snowy taiga on Java; they spawn in snowy plains and ice spikes.
Igloos and other structures
Igloos are the snowy taiga’s signature structure. They are small snow-block domes with a bed, a furnace and a crafting table. Some have a trapdoor under the carpet that leads down a ladder to a hidden basement, with a brewing stand, a chest and two cells holding a villager and a zombie villager. The basement gives you what you need to cure a zombie villager: a splash potion of weakness in the brewing stand and a golden apple in the chest.
Trail ruins can also generate here. They are mostly buried, so look for a few terracotta or brick blocks poking out of the snow and bring a brush for the suspicious gravel. Since Java 26.3 the snowy taiga also has its own design of abandoned camp. Under the surface you can find mineshafts, trial chambers and the usual ores, the same as any other land biome.
What happened to snowy taiga hills and mountains?
Snowy taiga hills and snowy taiga mountains were separate biomes before Java 1.18. Caves & Cliffs: Part II removed them, so today hilly snowy spruce forest is just snowy taiga on higher ground, and /locate won’t accept the old names. For snowy mountains, look for a grove, snowy slopes or the peaks above them; in our sample the grove was the snowy taiga’s fourth most common neighbour.
What changed in 2025-26
In Wilderness Bound (Java 26.3, September 2026), abandoned camps can generate in snowy taigas, with a design for this biome. Spruce leaves no longer drop falling-leaf particles (they gained them in 1.21.5).
In Spring to Life (Java 1.21.5, March 2025), pigs, cows and chickens that spawn here are the cold variants, and cold chickens lay blue eggs. Babies bred by players take a parent’s variant instead. Sheep spawn with cold-biome wool colors, so black is the most common. Fallen spruce trees now generate on the forest floor, some covered in mushrooms or vines.

How we measured
The numbers on this page come from our own seed map engine, running Java Edition 26.3 world generation. We generated 300 random seeds and sampled every 16th block across a 10,240 by 10,240 block square centered on each world’s spawn. “How common” is the snowy taiga’s share of those samples; “distance from spawn” is how far the nearest sample of the biome was. The seeds above were picked from the same run, and each coordinate was re-checked at block level.
