Cobbled deepslate at a glance
Cobbled deepslate is the broken-up version of deepslate, the dark gray rock that fills the bottom of every Overworld. Mine deepslate with a regular stone pickaxe and this is what drops. Think of it as deepslate’s cobblestone: same role, but darker, harder to break, and heavier-looking in builds.
It’s a staple for late-game players. It feeds the polished deepslate, deepslate bricks, and deepslate tiles family. It doubles as a stone-tier crafting material for tools. And because it generates everywhere below Y=0, you usually have more of it than you know what to do with.

What is cobbled deepslate?
Cobbled deepslate is a non-directional, dark gray block introduced in version 1.17 alongside deepslate itself. The idea is simple: deepslate is the smooth, “fresh” rock, and cobbled deepslate is what you get when you break it without Silk Touch. The textures are similar but the cobbled version has a rougher, more chaotic pattern and no pillar-like grain.
It belongs to the stone-tier material family, which means anywhere a recipe calls for cobblestone or stone, you can usually swap in cobbled deepslate. Stone tools, stone-tier weapons, furnaces, and most cobblestone-based building blocks accept it.
Numerically, cobbled deepslate has a hardness of 3.5 and a blast resistance of 6. Cobblestone, for comparison, sits at hardness 2 and blast resistance 6. So cobbled deepslate takes longer to mine than cobblestone but resists explosions about the same. That tradeoff makes it a popular choice for raid-resistant walls when you don’t want to commit to obsidian.
How to get cobbled deepslate
The fastest way to get cobbled deepslate is to mine deepslate. Deepslate generates everywhere in the Overworld between Y=0 and bedrock at Y=-64, with a transitional zone from about Y=0 to Y=-8 where it’s mixed in with regular stone. Below roughly Y=-8 it fully replaces stone. If you’ve ever dropped into a cave under a mountain biome and noticed the floor turn dark, that’s where you are.
Use any pickaxe rated stone-tier or higher. A wooden pickaxe will not drop the block when broken. Mining is slow compared to stone, so an iron or diamond pickaxe with Efficiency makes a real difference.
You can also find cobbled deepslate generating naturally inside Ancient Cities and Trial Chambers, where it’s the structure’s primary building material. You can mine it freely from these structures, though the mobs in each will be a bigger issue than the rock.
One thing cobbled deepslate does not do: smelt back into anything. Cobblestone smelts into stone; cobbled deepslate has no furnace recipe. To get the smooth, directional deepslate block, you need Silk Touch on your pickaxe, or you craft polished deepslate first and step backward through the recipe chain.
Mining cobbled deepslate
The mining numbers matter when you’re stripping a base or clearing a wide area. Deepslate is roughly twice as slow to mine as stone. A diamond pickaxe with Efficiency V plus a Haste II beacon makes the speed manageable for large projects, but bare-handed numbers are punishing.
Approximate mining times with no enchantments and no haste, on land:
- Wooden pickaxe: drops nothing (you’ll lose durability and get no block)
- Stone pickaxe: about 0.85 seconds per block
- Iron pickaxe: about 0.6 seconds per block
- Diamond pickaxe: about 0.45 seconds per block
- Netherite pickaxe: about 0.4 seconds per block
For long sessions in deepslate territory, get to iron at minimum. Diamond plus Efficiency V cuts the time noticeably, and Haste from a beacon stacks with that. If you’re gathering for a build, set up a Haste II beacon before you start hauling.
Crafting recipes and uses
Cobbled deepslate is the entry point to one of the most-used stone families in the game.
The polished, brick, and tile chain
Place 4 cobbled deepslate in a 2×2 pattern on a crafting table to get 4 polished deepslate. From there, the chain continues:
- 4 cobbled deepslate (2×2) = 4 polished deepslate
- 4 polished deepslate (2×2) = 4 deepslate bricks
- 4 deepslate bricks (2×2) = 4 deepslate tiles
A stonecutter handles all of these conversions one-for-one with no waste, and it can skip steps. One cobbled deepslate becomes one polished deepslate, one deepslate brick, or one deepslate tile, depending on what you select. Carry a stonecutter when you’re decorating; it’s the cleanest way to mix variants without juggling inventory.
Stairs, slabs, and walls
Cobbled deepslate has the standard three building variants. Place six cobbled deepslate in a stair pattern across the crafting grid for stairs. Place three cobbled deepslate in a horizontal row for slabs. Place six in a U-shape for walls.
- 6 cobbled deepslate (stair shape) = 4 cobbled deepslate stairs
- 3 cobbled deepslate (horizontal row) = 6 cobbled deepslate slabs
- 6 cobbled deepslate (two rows of three) = 6 cobbled deepslate walls
The stonecutter does the same conversions one-for-one and is the better option when you need exact counts.
Stone-tier tools
Cobbled deepslate counts as a stone-tier crafting ingredient. You can use it instead of cobblestone in recipes for stone pickaxes, axes, swords, shovels, and hoes. The resulting tool has identical stats to a stone tool made from cobblestone: same durability, same mining speed, same damage.
Cobbled deepslate is also valid in the recipe for furnaces. Eight cobbled deepslate in a ring around a 3×3 grid produces a furnace just like cobblestone does. Useful if you’ve fallen into a cave system with a stack of cobbled deepslate but no easy way back to surface stone.
Cobbled deepslate vs. deepslate
The two blocks look similar at a glance, but they behave differently:
- Deepslate has a directional texture, like a log. Cobbled deepslate does not; it’s the same on every face.
- Deepslate cannot be crafted into the polished, brick, or tile family directly. You polish cobbled deepslate first, then upgrade from there.
- To get deepslate (the smooth version) cleanly, you need Silk Touch. Without it, mining deepslate gives you cobbled deepslate every time.
- Deepslate has a slightly lower hardness (
3) than cobbled deepslate (3.5), so deepslate is technically faster to mine. The blast resistance is the same.
For most building work, the choice comes down to texture. Use deepslate when you want straight, grainy lines (good for pillars or contrasting bands). Use cobbled deepslate when you want chaotic, weathered surfaces (good for ruins, mines, or dungeon-style builds).
Building with cobbled deepslate
Cobbled deepslate has become one of the most-used dark stone materials for builders. A few practical notes:
- Pair it with deepslate bricks and polished deepslate for layered castle walls. Mixing two or three variants at the same level breaks up the flatness.
- Cobbled deepslate walls connect to fence gates and other walls cleanly, the same way cobblestone walls do.
- For underground bases, leaving the natural cobbled deepslate floor in place reads as part of the cave. You can build inside without importing a different floor material.
- It’s a strong border material for gardens because the dark gray contrasts with green plants and white flower variants without competing for attention.
If you’re going for an Ancient City aesthetic, cobbled deepslate is the workhorse. The vanilla city uses cobbled and polished deepslate as its base, with deepslate tiles for accent paths and reinforced deepslate as a center-of-room highlight.
Mob spawning and light
Cobbled deepslate is a normal opaque block as far as mob spawning is concerned. Hostile mobs can spawn on top of it under standard light-level rules (light level 0 in Java, 7 or below in Bedrock). If you’re using cobbled deepslate as a floor in a base, light it well.
It has no special interactions with sculk blocks despite being common in Ancient Cities. You can place sculk sensors and shriekers near cobbled deepslate without triggering anything special, and the block does not amplify or dampen vibrations.
Java vs. Bedrock differences
Cobbled deepslate behaves nearly identically across both editions. Mining speed, drops, recipes, and use as a stone-tier ingredient are the same. The only player-facing differences come from broader engine behavior (Bedrock’s mob spawning math is slightly different, mining-speed enchantment math varies a touch), and they affect cobbled deepslate the same way they affect every stone block. There’s nothing edition-specific worth flagging for this material on its own.
Tips and common mistakes
- Don’t try to smelt cobbled deepslate. It returns nothing in a furnace. The cobblestone-to-stone trick has no equivalent here.
- If you need plain deepslate for a build, use Silk Touch from the start. Otherwise you’re locked into the polished, brick, and tile chain.
- Stack a Haste II beacon over your gathering area. Mining deepslate without it is one of the slower things you’ll do in late game.
- Carry a stonecutter when you’re decorating with deepslate variants. It saves the back-and-forth crafting and gives 1:1 conversions.
- If you’re trying to break into an Ancient City wall, cobbled deepslate’s blast resistance of
6makes TNT a poor option. Mine it manually.
