Totem of Undying in Minecraft: How it works and where to get it

What is the Totem of Undying?

The Totem of Undying is a held item that brings you back to full life the moment you would have died. If you are holding one when a hit, a fall, or a pool of lava would otherwise kill you, the totem is used up instead, and you survive with a sliver of health and a few seconds of protection to escape.

It is the closest thing Minecraft has to an extra life. You don’t equip it like armor or eat it like food. You just need to be holding it in your main hand or off-hand when the killing blow lands. One totem saves you once, then it’s gone.

That single-use safety net makes it one of the most valuable things you can carry into the Nether, a raid, or a fight you might lose.

Where the Totem of Undying comes from

There is only one way to get a Totem of Undying in survival: kill an Evoker. Evokers are spellcasting illagers that drop exactly one totem when they die, every single time. The drop is guaranteed and is not affected by the Looting enchantment, so you can’t farm extra totems off a single kill.

Evokers show up in two places.

Woodland mansions

Woodland mansions are huge dark-oak buildings that generate far out in the dark forest. A mansion usually holds two or three evokers in its rooms, so clearing one out is the classic way to pick up your first totem. Mansions are rare and can sit thousands of blocks from spawn, which is why many players use a cartographer villager’s woodland explorer map to find one.

Raids

The more reliable source is raids. If you kill a pillager captain, you get the Bad Omen effect, and walking into a village while it’s active starts a raid. Evokers appear in the later waves of a raid, and a raid throws several waves at you. Because raids repeat, they turn the totem into a renewable resource: trigger Bad Omen, defend a village, collect totems, repeat. The difficulty level changes how many waves and how many evokers you face, so a Hard-difficulty raid will hand you more totems than an Easy one.

How to beat an evoker for the totem

Evokers don’t fight with weapons, they fight with spells, so the usual sword-and-shield approach needs a tweak. An evoker has two main attacks. The first summons a line of snapping fangs that erupt from the ground and chase you, which is why standing still in front of one is a quick way to take heavy damage. The second summons vexes, small flying mobs that pass through walls and stab at you with iron swords.

The trick is to close the distance fast. Evokers cast from range, and they’re far less dangerous up close because the fangs need a moment to appear. Rush in, keep hitting, and don’t give the evoker room to back off and cast again. A shield helps against the vexes, and decent armor with the Protection enchantment makes the fangs survivable while you press the attack.

In a woodland mansion, fight evokers one room at a time rather than waking the whole building at once. In a raid, prioritize the evoker as soon as it appears in a wave, because the vexes it summons will hound you for the rest of the fight if you let it keep casting.

How the Totem of Undying works

The rule is simple: the totem only protects you if you are holding it. Stashing one in your inventory or hotbar does nothing. It has to be in your main hand or your off-hand slot at the exact instant lethal damage hits.

Most players keep a totem in the off-hand slot and a weapon in the main hand. That way you can swing a sword and stay protected at the same time. When the totem fires, here is what happens in order:

  • The fatal damage is canceled and the totem is consumed.
  • Your health drops to half a heart, then immediately starts climbing back.
  • You get Regeneration II for about 45 seconds, which refills the rest of your health bar.
  • You get Fire Resistance for about 40 seconds, so standing in lava or fire won’t finish the job.
  • You get Absorption II for a few seconds, adding extra temporary hearts as a buffer.
  • Any potion effects you already had are cleared.

On screen you’ll see a green totem graphic spin up and a burst of green particles. That animation is your signal that the totem just saved you and you are now running on borrowed time. Get to safety, because those protective effects run out fast.

The Absorption hearts matter more than they look. They sit on top of your normal health as a temporary cushion, so for the first few seconds after a totem fires you can take another hit or two without dropping back to critical. But Absorption fades quickly, and once it’s gone you’re relying on the Regeneration effect to finish topping you off. The practical takeaway: the window where you’re safest is the first couple of seconds, and it shrinks fast. Use that window to run, not to keep fighting.

Because the totem also wipes your existing potion effects, there’s a small trade-off worth knowing. If you were running Strength, Speed, or Night Vision when the totem fired, those are gone afterward. It rarely changes the outcome, but on a long boss fight it’s one more thing to re-apply once you’re clear.

Only one totem can activate per fatal hit. If a single blow would have killed you, holding two totems doesn’t burn both. The game uses one, you survive, and the second is still in your hand for next time.

What the totem can’t save you from

The Totem of Undying is powerful, but it is not true immortality. A few things go straight through it.

The void is the big one. If you fall out of the world below bedrock, or drop off the bottom of the End, the totem will not bring you back. Void damage ignores it completely. The /kill command also bypasses the totem, which matters if you’re playing on a server that uses it.

It also won’t help if you simply aren’t holding it. Plenty of players have died with three totems sitting in their backpack because none were in a hand. The totem protects the hand slots only.

Tips and common mistakes

Keep the totem in your off-hand before any fight you might lose. The Wither, the Ender Dragon, a raid, a deep cave full of creepers: that’s when you want it ready, not buried in your inventory.

Watch the off-hand slot during long fights. When a totem fires, the slot empties, and it’s easy to keep swinging without noticing you’re no longer protected. After every save, glance at that slot and slot in a fresh totem if you have one.

Don’t lean on the totem as a plan. It buys you a couple of seconds and half a heart of breathing room, not a full recovery. If you pop a totem in lava, you still need to get out before Fire Resistance wears off. If you pop one mid-fight, retreat and heal rather than trading more blows.

Stock up during raids. One totem feels precious, but a few good raids will leave you with a stack. Carrying spares means you can keep one in the off-hand at all times and never sweat losing it.

Java and Bedrock differences

The totem behaves almost identically across both editions. Off-hand holding works in Java and Bedrock, the activation effects are the same, and evokers drop one totem on death in both. Raids and woodland mansions are the sources on both platforms too. If you’ve used a totem in one edition, it works the way you expect in the other.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Totem of Undying have to be in your hand?

Yes. It only works from your main hand or off-hand slot. A totem sitting anywhere else in your inventory does nothing when you take a lethal hit.

Does the totem save you from the void?
