What a stronghold is
A stronghold is a large underground structure built from stone bricks, and it holds the only naturally generated End Portal in the game. If you want to reach the End and fight the Ender Dragon, you have to find one first. There is no other way in.
Strongholds spawn deep below the surface, usually starting somewhere around ground level and running down toward bedrock. They are a maze of corridors, staircases, and rooms, and the one room that matters most is the portal room, where twelve End Portal frames sit over a pool of lava.
You don’t stumble onto a stronghold by accident very often. You find one on purpose, using eyes of ender to point the way.
Where strongholds generate
In Java Edition, a world generates 128 strongholds, arranged in eight rings around the world origin at coordinates 0, 0. The innermost ring holds three strongholds, sitting roughly 1,280 to 2,816 blocks out from the center. Each ring further out holds more of them and spans a wider band. Because the first three are the closest to spawn, those are almost always the ones players end up digging into.
Bedrock Edition also scatters strongholds around the world and places a single End Portal in each. The exact count and spacing differ from Java, but the method for finding one is the same on both versions: throw an eye of ender and follow it.
A stronghold generates as a connected set of rooms and passages, and it will cut through whatever terrain is already there. That means parts of it can open into caves, ravines, or an abandoned mineshaft, which is worth remembering when you are tunneling toward one and the walls suddenly change.
How to find a stronghold
The tool for the job is the eye of ender. You craft each one from an ender pearl and blaze powder, so a trip to the Nether for blaze rods and a supply of pearls from endermen (or piglin trades) comes first.
Once you have a stack of eyes, the process is simple:
- Stand in the open and throw an eye of ender by using it. It floats up into the air, drifts in the direction of the nearest stronghold, then drops back down.
- Walk toward the spot where it landed. Pick the eye back up if it survived the throw.
- Throw another eye. Keep repeating, moving in the direction the eyes travel.
- When an eye stops moving horizontally and instead hovers and sinks straight down, you are standing on top of the stronghold. Dig down carefully from there.
Thrown eyes have a chance to shatter instead of dropping to the ground, so you will lose some along the way. Bring more than twelve. Many players carry fifteen or sixteen to have enough left over to activate the portal once they arrive.
A common trick is triangulation. Instead of throwing eye after eye and burning through your supply, throw one, note the exact angle it travels using the F3 debug screen, walk a few hundred blocks to the side, and throw a second. The two lines cross at the stronghold, which saves eyes and time. This works cleanly in Java Edition where the debug screen shows your facing direction.
Inside a stronghold
Strongholds are built almost entirely from stone bricks, including the regular, mossy, and cracked variants, which gives them a worn, ruined look. The layout is randomized, so no two are identical, but the same set of rooms and features shows up across most of them.
Rooms you’ll run into
Corridors link everything together, some straight, some turning, many with iron door frames and wooden doors. Spiral staircases and straight staircases move you between levels. Beyond the hallways, a stronghold can contain prison cells lined with iron bars, a room with a fountain pool, storerooms holding chests, and empty chambers that exist just to make the maze harder to read.
The library
The library is the room most players hope to find. It is packed with bookshelves stacked two levels high in the larger version, strung with cobwebs, and lit by fence-and-torch chandeliers. Libraries hold chests, and those chests are where the best loot in a stronghold tends to sit. Not every stronghold has a library, and in Bedrock Edition some strongholds skip it entirely, so finding one is a bit of luck.
The End Portal room
This is the reason you came. The portal room sits at the bottom of a short staircase and holds a raised platform with twelve End Portal frame blocks arranged in a square, framing an empty three-by-three space. Below the platform is a pool of lava, so watch your footing.
Each of the twelve frames has a chance to already contain an eye of ender when the world generates. Some rooms come with a few eyes filled in, some come with none. Before you craft a full set of twelve, count how many frames are already filled and only make up the difference.
To activate the portal, place an eye of ender into every empty frame by using the eye on it. Make sure each frame’s eye faces inward toward the center. When the last eye goes in, the middle fills with the portal, and stepping into it drops you straight into the End. Once it’s active, you cannot turn it off, so gear up before you place that final eye.
A monster spawner sits in this room and pumps out silverfish, so expect a fight while you work. Breaking the spawner with a pickaxe or walling it off stops the flow.
What loot strongholds hold
Stronghold chests, mostly in the library and storerooms, can carry a solid spread of items. Common finds include iron and gold ingots, redstone, coal, apples, bread, an iron pickaxe, and ender pearls. The prize pull is an enchanted book, which can roll useful enchantments you might not have access to yet.
Other chests turn up items like a saddle, a horse armor piece, or a music disc, depending on the roll. None of it is guaranteed, and a given stronghold might have only a couple of chests, so treat the loot as a bonus on top of the portal rather than the main goal.
Silverfish and infested blocks
Silverfish are the pest of the stronghold. They are tiny, fast, and come from two places: the spawner in the portal room, and infested stone bricks scattered through the walls. An infested block looks just like a normal stone brick until you break it, at which point a silverfish pops out.
The dangerous part is that hitting one silverfish can wake nearby infested blocks and summon a swarm. If you get mobbed, back into a corridor so only one or two can reach you at a time, and consider mining around suspected infested blocks rather than straight through them. A stone brick that takes noticeably longer to break than its neighbors is often an infested one.
Tips and common mistakes
Bring building blocks and a water bucket. The lava under the portal has ended plenty of runs, and a water bucket lets you climb back out or block a lava flow. Bring a bed only for the overworld, since sleeping doesn’t work in the End.
Don’t place the final eye before you are ready to fight the dragon. Players activate the portal, fall in by accident, and arrive unprepared. Set your spawn nearby first.
Count the frames before crafting eyes. Making a full twelve when the room already has four filled wastes four pearls and four blaze powder.
Light the portal room as you clear it. Torches slow the silverfish problem and keep other mobs from wandering in through the caves a stronghold often connects to.
Java and Bedrock differences
The core idea is identical on both versions, but a few details vary. Java worlds hold 128 strongholds in fixed rings, while Bedrock uses its own distribution. Bedrock strongholds are often larger and can connect to mineshafts, and their portal room sometimes generates with a chest that Java’s does not have. Some Bedrock strongholds lack a library. On both versions, eyes of ender are the way in, and the End Portal always needs twelve eyes to switch on.
Frequently asked questions
How many eyes of ender do I need for a stronghold?
Up to twelve to fill the portal, plus extras for finding it, since thrown eyes can shatter. Fifteen or sixteen is a safe number to set out with.
Can eyes of ender break when thrown?
Yes. Each throw has a chance to shatter the eye instead of dropping it back for pickup, which is why you carry spares.
How deep are strongholds?
They start below the surface and run down toward bedrock. The exact depth varies with the terrain, since a stronghold generates into whatever is already there.
Can there be more than one stronghold near me?
In Java Edition the closest three sit in the innermost ring around the world origin, so yes, more than one can be within reach. Eyes of ender always point to the nearest.
Can I turn off an End Portal after activating it?
No. Once all twelve eyes are placed and the portal opens, it stays open. Plan your gear before the last eye.
Do strongholds always have a library?
Not always. Many do, but the layout is random, and some strongholds, especially on Bedrock, generate without one.
Getting to the End
Finding a stronghold is really the last errand before the endgame. Once you have the portal room lit, the silverfish handled, and your spawn point set nearby, placing that twelfth eye is the moment everything you’ve gathered gets put to use. Stock up on eyes, follow them down, and the door to the End is yours.
