Woodland mansion in Minecraft: how to find and loot it

By July 16, 2026No Comments

What is a woodland mansion?

A woodland mansion is a giant dark oak building that generates deep inside dark forest biomes. It is one of the largest structures in Minecraft, with three floors, dozens of rooms, and a maze of hallways that can take a long time to clear.

The mansion matters for two reasons. It is one of only two places you can meet an evoker, and evokers are the only mob that drops the totem of undying. It also hides some of the best chest loot in the game, tucked away in rooms you have to hunt for.

Getting to one is the hard part. Mansions are rare and usually sit thousands of blocks from spawn, so most players buy a map to track one down rather than stumbling on it by accident.

Where woodland mansions generate

Woodland mansions only spawn in the dark forest biome. That biome is easy to recognize: tall dark oak trees packed close together, with leaves so thick the forest floor stays dim even at noon. If you are not standing in a dark forest, there is no mansion nearby.

They also generate rarely. The game spaces mansions far apart, so even in a large dark forest you might not find one, and the nearest mansion to your world spawn can be five thousand blocks away or more. This is why wandering around looking for one is slow. A map points you straight at the closest mansion instead.

Because the structure is so big, it often clips into hills or carves out part of the forest around it. From a distance you will spot the flat cobblestone-and-dark-oak walls rising above the treeline, which stand out against the round shapes of the forest.

How to find a woodland mansion

You have two reliable options: buy an explorer map, or use a command if you play with cheats on.

Buy a woodland explorer map

The most common method is to trade for a woodland explorer map from a cartographer villager. A cartographer reaches the journeyman tier after you trade with it a few times, and at that tier it can offer the woodland explorer map for emeralds plus a compass.

The map shows a white mansion icon and fills in as you travel toward it. Follow the icon until you reach the structure. One catch worth knowing: the map only ever points to the nearest mansion when it was made, so if you already looted that one, a second map from the same villager may lead right back to it.

Finding a cartographer is the main hurdle. You need a village with a cartography table, or you can place a cartography table next to an unemployed villager to turn it into a cartographer. Then trade paper and other goods until the map trade appears.

Use the locate command

If cheats are on in your world, you can run /locate structure minecraft:mansion and the game returns the coordinates of the closest one. On older versions the command is /locate mansion. This is the fastest route for creative builds or for testing, though it skips the exploration that makes finding one feel earned.

What’s inside a woodland mansion

The inside is a mix of decorated rooms, hallways, storage, and hidden spaces. Some rooms are just for show, with carpets, bookshelves, and furniture built from wool and wood. Others hold chests, mobs, or both. The layout is randomized from a set of room templates, so no two mansions are laid out exactly the same.

Illagers: evokers and vindicators

The mansion is patrolled by illagers, the hostile gray-skinned villagers. Two types live here. Vindicators carry iron axes and hit hard in melee, and they often lurk in groups behind doors. Evokers are the spellcasters. An evoker summons rows of biting fangs from the ground and conjures small flying vexes that pass through walls to attack you.

Evokers are the reason many players make the trip. When you kill one, it always drops a totem of undying, the item that saves you from death when you are holding it. Outside of village raids, the mansion is the only place to get one.

On peaceful difficulty, these illagers do not spawn, so you can explore an empty mansion safely, but you also give up the totem drop and any mob-related danger.

Allays in cage rooms

Some mansions include a small jail-style room with a dark oak cage. Inside the cage you can find an allay, the little blue flying helper that picks up items and brings copies of them back to you. Break the cage open to free it. Pillager outposts are the other spot allays show up, so a mansion trip can double as a way to collect a few.

Secret rooms and hidden loot

The best loot in a mansion is usually walled off. Builders of these structures like to bury chests inside blank rooms with no obvious door, so you often have to break through a wall to reach them. A common trick is to look for a room that seems too small for the space it takes up, then mine into the gap.

Chest contents range from ordinary supplies to strong gear. You can pull tools, armor, iron and gold, and sometimes enchanted books or an enchanted apple. A few hidden rooms are famous among players, including one with a lava-lit statue and one built around a single diamond block sealed in obsidian. Not every mansion has these, since the rooms are chosen at random.

How to raid a woodland mansion safely

A mansion can kill an underprepared player fast, so gear up before you go in. Bring armor with decent enchantments, a solid weapon, food, and blocks to wall off doorways. A shield helps against vindicator axes and against the evoker’s fangs.

Clear the building room by room instead of running through it. Open one door, deal with what is behind it, then move on. Running deep into the mansion tends to wake several rooms of illagers at once, and getting swarmed by vindicators in a narrow hall is how most deaths happen.

Light the place as you go if you plan to come back. Mansions are dark, and hostile mobs spawn in unlit rooms over time, so torches turn a cleared mansion into a safe base or storage spot. Many players end up moving in once the illagers are gone.

Watch your footing near the upper floors. Some rooms open onto drops, and a vex knocking you off a ledge on the third floor does real fall damage on top of everything else.

If you already own a totem of undying, keep it in your off-hand slot while you fight. It triggers automatically the moment a hit would kill you, which buys you the second you need to eat, run, or place a block. Killing the mansion’s evokers then tops your supply back up.

Java vs Bedrock differences

Woodland mansions work almost the same on both editions. They spawn in dark forests, hold the same illagers, and drop the totem of undying from evokers on both. The main differences come down to loot tables and small generation quirks, so a chest in one edition may hold slightly different items than the same room in the other. Explorer maps and the locate command work on both, though the exact command syntax has changed across versions on each edition.

Frequently asked questions

How rare are woodland mansions?

Very rare. They only generate in dark forest biomes, and the game spaces them far apart, so the closest one to spawn is often thousands of blocks away. Buying a woodland explorer map is far faster than searching on foot.

How do I find a woodland mansion without a map?

You can explore dark forest biomes and hope to spot one, but that is slow and unreliable. If cheats are on, /locate structure minecraft:mansion gives you the coordinates instantly. Otherwise the explorer map is the practical answer.

What loot is in a woodland mansion?

Chests can hold tools, armor, iron, gold, and sometimes enchanted books or an enchanted apple. The real prize is the totem of undying, which every evoker in the mansion drops when killed.

Can you get a totem of undying from a woodland mansion?

Yes. Evokers always drop a totem when they die, and the mansion is one of only two places they appear. The other is a village raid.

Are woodland mansions safe to live in?

They can be, once you clear the illagers and light every room so nothing respawns. The dark oak build and huge floor plan make them popular bases. Just seal or light any dark corners first.

Do woodland mansions respawn illagers?

The evokers and vindicators that generate with the mansion do not come back once killed. But like any dark space, unlit rooms will spawn ordinary hostile mobs over time, so keep it lit if you stay.

Worth the trip?

If you want a totem of undying and you would rather not grind village raids, a woodland mansion is the cleaner path. Bring gear, take it slow, and you walk away with a totem, a pile of loot, and a giant dark oak building you can turn into a base.
