What Resistance does
Resistance is a status effect that lowers the damage you take from almost every source in the game. Each level cuts incoming damage by 20 percent, so a hit that would normally take three hearts lands softer while the effect is active.
It is one of the few effects that helps against nearly everything at once: mob attacks, fall damage, explosions, fire, and drowning all get reduced. That makes it valuable when you are pushing into a dangerous area like a raid, a bastion, or the fight with the Warden.
You cannot brew a straight Resistance potion in survival, which trips up a lot of players. The effect comes from a handful of specific sources instead, and each one gives a different level and duration.
While the effect is running you will see the Resistance icon in your inventory next to any other active effects, along with faint status-effect particles around your character. The icon looks like a small yellow shield, which is an easy way to confirm the effect is still ticking before you commit to a risky jump or a fight.
How much damage Resistance blocks
The reduction is 20 percent per level, and it stacks up to full immunity. Here is what each level does:
| Level | Damage reduction | How you get it |
|---|---|---|
| Resistance I | 20% | Beacon, enchanted golden apple |
| Resistance II | 40% | Commands |
| Resistance III | 60% | Potion of the Turtle Master |
| Resistance IV | 80% | Potion of the Turtle Master II |
| Resistance V | 100% | Commands only |
Resistance V blocks all of the damage from most sources, which is why it shows up in adventure maps and custom servers where the builder wants a player to survive something that would otherwise be lethal. You cannot reach level V in normal survival play. The highest a survival player gets is Resistance IV from an upgraded Turtle Master potion.
What Resistance does not protect against
A few damage types ignore the effect completely, even at Resistance V. Void damage from falling out of the world below the bedrock layer still kills you instantly. Starvation from an empty hunger bar keeps ticking. The /kill command bypasses it, and so does damage from the /damage command when it uses a bypassing type.
The practical takeaway: Resistance is a shield against combat and environmental hits, not a cheat code for the void. If you jump into the End’s empty space with Resistance V running, you still die.
How to get Resistance
Beacon
A beacon gives Resistance I to any player standing in its range. Resistance is a second-tier power, so your beacon pyramid needs at least two full layers under it before the effect shows up in the menu. Once the pyramid is built and you feed the beacon an iron ingot, gold ingot, emerald, diamond, or netherite ingot, you can select Resistance and activate it.
The range grows with the pyramid size, starting around 20 blocks for a small pyramid and reaching roughly 50 blocks for a full four-layer one. The effect refreshes as long as you stay inside the field, and it lingers for several seconds after you step out. This is the most reliable long-term source because it never runs out while you are near your base, and it costs nothing to keep active once the pyramid is built.
Potion of the Turtle Master
This is the only brewable source of Resistance. You make it by brewing a turtle shell into an awkward potion. The base version gives Slowness IV and Resistance III for 20 seconds. Adding glowstone dust upgrades it to Resistance IV (the Turtle Master II version), while redstone dust extends the duration instead of raising the level.
The catch is the Slowness that comes bundled with it. You take far less damage, but you crawl. It works best as a panic button when you are cornered and need to tank a few hits, not as something you sip before a chase.
The base potion lasts 20 seconds. The redstone-extended version doubles that to 40 seconds while staying at Resistance III, and the glowstone version keeps the short duration but bumps you to Resistance IV. Which one you want depends on the fight: a longer window for holding a choke point, or a bigger reduction for soaking one heavy burst of damage.
Enchanted golden apple
Eating an enchanted golden apple (the crafted “notch apple,” not the regular golden apple) grants Resistance I for five minutes, along with Fire Resistance, Absorption, and Regeneration. The regular golden apple does not give Resistance, so check which one you are holding before a big fight.
Because the enchanted apple is expensive to make or find, most players save it for boss fights or a hard raid rather than everyday mining.
Commands
If you have cheats on or operator access, you can grant any level with /effect give <player> resistance <seconds> <amplifier>. The amplifier is one lower than the displayed level, so /effect give @s resistance 60 4 gives you Resistance V for one minute. This is how map makers set up sections where the player needs to survive a scripted hazard.
Where Resistance sits in the damage math
Minecraft applies damage reduction in a set order. Armor points come off first, then Protection enchantments, then the Resistance effect, and finally Absorption soaks up whatever is left. Because Resistance is a percentage taken after armor, it stacks well with a good armor set instead of overlapping with it.
That layering is why a player in enchanted netherite with Resistance IV can walk through hits that would flatten an unarmored player. Each layer chips away at the same incoming number before it touches your hearts.
Tips and common mistakes
Keep a couple of Turtle Master potions in your hotbar for emergencies, but remember the Slowness. Drinking one mid-fight can leave you unable to run from a creeper, so use it when you plan to stand your ground.
Don’t count on Resistance for fall damage from very high places if you are only at level I or II. Twenty or forty percent off a long fall can still leave you dead. Feather Falling boots are the better answer for heights.
If you are building a beacon base, Resistance pairs well with a Regeneration secondary power once you have a full four-layer pyramid, giving you steady healing and reduced damage at the same time.
Java and Bedrock differences
The effect behaves the same way on both editions: 20 percent reduction per level, the same immunity gaps for the void and starvation. The Potion of the Turtle Master is available in both, with the same shell-based recipe. If you play on Bedrock with the education or experimental toggles, command syntax for granting the effect can differ slightly, but the survival sources match.
Frequently asked questions
Can you make a Resistance potion?
Not a pure one. The Potion of the Turtle Master is the only brewable source, and it always comes packaged with Slowness. There is no recipe that gives Resistance on its own.
Does Resistance stop fall damage?
Yes, it reduces fall damage by the same 20 percent per level as any other hit. At low levels the reduction may not be enough to survive a big drop, so it is not a substitute for Feather Falling or a water bucket.
Is Resistance V the same as invincibility?
Close, but no. Resistance V blocks 100 percent of most damage, yet the void, starvation, and the kill command still get through. You can only reach level V through commands.
Does Resistance protect against the Warden?
It reduces the Warden’s melee and ranged hits like any other damage, which helps a lot given how hard the Warden hits. It does nothing to reduce the Darkness effect the Warden applies, since Darkness is not damage.
Do enchanted golden apples give Resistance?
Yes. The enchanted golden apple gives Resistance I for five minutes. The plain golden apple does not, so make sure you are eating the right one.
Does Resistance work against explosions?
Yes. Creeper blasts, TNT, and end crystal explosions all count as damage that Resistance reduces. Pairing it with Blast Protection armor makes explosive encounters much more survivable.
How long does Resistance last?
It depends on the source. A beacon keeps it active as long as you stay in range. An enchanted golden apple gives five minutes. A Turtle Master potion gives 20 or 40 seconds depending on the version. With commands you set the duration yourself.
Can mobs have Resistance?
Yes, through commands or map setups. A mob given the Resistance effect takes reduced damage from your attacks the same way you would, which is one way custom maps make a boss feel tankier without simply raising its health.
Worth keeping around
Resistance rewards planning. A beacon at base, a stack of Turtle Master potions for tight spots, and an enchanted apple saved for the hardest fights cover most of the situations where the effect earns its slot. Learn which source fits which moment and you will take a lot less damage across a world.
