Hero of the Village in Minecraft: how to get it and what it does

By July 16, 2026No Comments

Hero of the Village is the reward you get for winning a raid in Minecraft. Beat every wave of pillagers, and the game hands you a status effect that slashes villager trade prices and, in Java Edition, makes the villagers start tossing free items at you.

It is one of the few effects in the game that helps your wallet instead of your health bar. If you trade with villagers at all, learning to farm this effect is one of the fastest ways to stockpile emeralds and cheap gear.

Here is how to earn it, what each level does, and how to make the most of the timer before it runs out.

What is Hero of the Village?

Hero of the Village is a beneficial status effect granted only to a player who defeats a raid. You cannot brew it, find it in a potion, or get it from a command drop in normal play. The single legitimate source is finishing off the last raider in the last wave of a raid.

While the effect is active, a green banner icon sits in your effects list, and faint particles drift around your character. Two things happen for as long as the timer runs: villager trades cost fewer emeralds, and (in Java Edition) nearby villagers throw gifts at you based on their job.

The effect comes in five levels, from Hero of the Village I to Hero of the Village V. The level you receive matches the strength of the raid you beat, which traces back to the Bad Omen level that started it.

How to get Hero of the Village

Getting the effect is a chain of steps. Each one sets up the next, so it helps to see the whole path before you start.

Step 1: get Bad Omen

Raids start with the Bad Omen effect. In current versions, you get Bad Omen by drinking an Ominous Bottle. Raid captains, the pillagers carrying a flag on their back, drop an Ominous Bottle when you kill them. You will find these captains leading pillager patrols in the overworld, guarding pillager outposts, and inside the waves of a raid itself.

Ominous Bottles come in five strengths. A stronger bottle gives a higher Bad Omen level, which later becomes a higher Hero of the Village level. If you want the maximum reward, hold out for a level V bottle before you trigger the raid.

In older versions of the game, killing a raid captain applied Bad Omen to you directly instead of dropping a bottle. If you are playing on a version from before the 1.21 update, expect that behavior instead.

Step 2: enter a village

Walk into a village while you have the Bad Omen effect. The game checks whether the village has at least one villager and one claimed bed, and if it does, the raid begins. Your Bad Omen effect disappears the moment the raid starts, so it is a one-time key.

A raid bar appears at the top of the screen showing how many raiders are left. Ringing the village bell is a smart first move, since it marks nearby raiders with a glowing outline through walls.

Step 3: win every wave

A raid throws several waves of pillagers, vindicators, witches, ravagers, and evokers at the village. The number of waves scales with difficulty and with your Bad Omen level. You have to defeat every raider in every wave. If the raiders kill enough villagers first, or you leave the area for too long, the raid can fail, and you get nothing.

When the final raider drops, the raid bar fills and clears, a victory sound plays, and Hero of the Village lands on you at a level that matches the raid you just survived.

What the effect does

The headline benefit is cheaper trades. Every villager you deal with while the effect is active offers a discount on their prices. Buy an emerald tool, a book, or a stack of food, and it costs fewer emeralds than it normally would. The discount stacks with the price drop you already get from curing a zombie villager, so a cured librarian under a Hero of the Village discount can sell mending books for a single emerald.

The size of the discount grows with the effect level. Hero of the Village I gives a modest cut. By Hero of the Village V, prices bottom out, and many trades drop to the game’s minimum of one emerald. This is why raiders farm high-level Ominous Bottles: the difference between level I and level V is the difference between a small saving and a fire sale.

The discount reaches every villager within range, not just one. Set up next to a trading hall, win a raid nearby, and every villager in the hall goes on sale at once.

Villager gifts

In Java Edition, villagers with a profession throw gifts at a player who has Hero of the Village. Each profession gives items tied to its job. A farmer tosses bread, carrots, or potatoes. A fisherman throws fish. A cleric might give redstone or glowstone dust, a toolsmith gives coal or iron, and so on down the list of jobs.

Gifts land near your feet at intervals while the effect runs, so standing in a busy village during Hero of the Village can rain useful items on you for free. Bedrock Edition does not have the villager gift feature, so on Bedrock the effect is purely a trade discount.

How long Hero of the Village lasts

The effect lasts 40 minutes from the moment you win the raid. That is a long window by Minecraft standards, but it burns down in real time whether you are trading or not, so it pays to have your emeralds and your shopping list ready before you finish the raid.

The timer does not reset if you win a second raid while the first effect is still running. A fresh win refreshes the duration and applies whichever level is higher, so back-to-back raids will not shorten your discount.

Hero of the Village levels and the discount

The five levels map directly to the Bad Omen level that kicked off the raid. Drink a level III Ominous Bottle, win that raid, and you get Hero of the Village III. The higher the number, the steeper the discount on every trade.

For most players, the practical takeaway is simple: save your strongest Ominous Bottle for a village with a full trading hall. A level V raid is harder to survive, but the payoff is the deepest possible discount across every villager you own, which can save hundreds of emeralds in a single trading session.

Tips and common mistakes

Build your trading hall before you farm the effect. The discount only helps if you have villagers ready to trade the moment you win, and 40 minutes goes fast if you are still assigning jobs.

Keep the raid away from your best villagers. Ravagers and other raiders will kill villagers, and a raid fought inside your trading hall can wipe out the very traders you wanted the discount for. Lure the fight to the edge of the village or a walled arena, then walk back to your hall once you win.

Do not trigger a raid until you are ready to spend. The clock starts at the victory, not at the trade, so finishing a raid and then spending 15 minutes reorganizing chests wastes a chunk of your window.

Watch for raiders you missed. A single pillager that wandered off or got stuck on a rooftop can stall the raid on its last wave. Ring the bell to light up stragglers through walls, and check the raid bar count against the mobs you can see.

Java and Bedrock differences

The core discount works the same in both editions, but two differences matter. Java Edition gives you villager gifts on top of the discount, while Bedrock does not. The two versions also handle raid difficulty and mob composition a little differently, so a raid on Bedrock can feel tougher or easier than the same raid on Java. The way you earn the effect, by winning a raid started with Bad Omen, is identical.

Frequently asked questions

How do you get Hero of the Village?

Win a raid. Get the Bad Omen effect by drinking an Ominous Bottle, walk into a village to start the raid, and defeat every raider in every wave. The effect is granted the instant the last raider dies.

How long does Hero of the Village last?

40 minutes from the moment you win the raid. Winning another raid while it is active refreshes the timer and keeps the higher level.

Does Hero of the Village stack?

The discount does not stack with itself, but a higher level replaces a lower one, and it does stack with the separate discount from curing a zombie villager. A cured trader under Hero of the Village V can offer trades at the one-emerald minimum.

Why are villagers throwing food at me?

That is the villager gift feature in Java Edition. Villagers with a job toss items tied to their profession at any player who has Hero of the Village. Bedrock Edition does not include gifts.

Can you get Hero of the Village without fighting a raid?

Not in normal survival play. Winning a raid is the only legitimate source. Commands can apply the effect, but there is no potion, food, or block that grants it during regular gameplay.

Does the discount apply to all villagers or just one?

All villagers within range while the effect is active. That is why players line up a full trading hall before winning the raid.

Getting the most from it

Treat Hero of the Village as a scheduled shopping trip rather than a lucky bonus. Stockpile emeralds, line up the trades you actually want, save your highest Ominous Bottle for the run, and fight the raid somewhere your villagers stay safe. Do that, and one 40-minute window can restock your enchanted books, tools, and armor for a fraction of the usual price.
