Regeneration in Minecraft: how the effect works and how to get it

By July 16, 2026No Comments

What the Regeneration effect does

Regeneration is a status effect that slowly refills your health bar. While it’s active, you gain half a heart at a set interval, no matter what you’re doing. It heals you in combat, while mining, or standing still.

The effect shows up as a pink heart icon in your inventory screen and, in newer versions, on the HUD above your hotbar. A timer counts down until it wears off.

Regeneration is one of the most useful effects to keep on hand. It buys you survivability in a fight, patches you up after a bad fall, and covers you when your hunger bar is too low to heal on its own.

How fast Regeneration heals

The healing speed depends on the effect’s level. Each heal restores 1 health point, which is half a heart. Higher levels shorten the gap between those heals rather than making each heal bigger.

Minecraft measures the gap in game ticks, and there are 20 ticks in a second. The interval halves with every level. Here’s how that plays out:

Level Heal interval Roughly
Regeneration I 50 ticks half a heart every 2.5 seconds
Regeneration II 25 ticks half a heart every 1.25 seconds
Regeneration III 12 ticks about half a heart every 0.6 seconds
Regeneration IV 6 ticks about half a heart every 0.3 seconds
Regeneration V 3 ticks half a heart every 0.15 seconds

In normal survival play you’ll mostly see Regeneration I and II. Regeneration V comes up in one specific spot, the enchanted golden apple in Bedrock Edition, and it refills almost the whole bar in a couple of seconds.

How to get Regeneration

Four sources cover almost every case: a brewed potion, a golden apple, an enchanted golden apple, and a beacon. Each fits a different situation.

Potion of Regeneration

The potion is the source to reach for when you want the effect to last. You need a ghast tear, which drops from ghasts in the Nether. Start with an Awkward Potion (a water bottle brewed with nether wart), then add the ghast tear in a brewing stand.

The base Potion of Regeneration gives Regeneration I for 45 seconds. Add redstone dust to stretch it to 1 minute 30 seconds. Add glowstone dust instead to raise it to Regeneration II for 22 seconds. You can also mix in gunpowder to turn it into a splash potion you can throw, which is handy for healing a teammate or a pet from a distance.

Golden apple

A regular golden apple gives Regeneration II for 5 seconds along with Absorption for 2 minutes. That short burst restores about 4 hearts, and the Absorption stacks a temporary yellow health buffer on top. Golden apples are cheap to make: eight gold ingots arranged around one apple in a crafting grid.

Enchanted golden apple

The enchanted golden apple, often called the “god apple” or “notch apple,” is the strongest quick heal in the game. You can’t craft it anymore, so you find it in loot chests in spots like bastion remnants, dungeons, mineshafts, and desert temples.

Its Regeneration effect differs between editions. In Java Edition it grants Regeneration II for 20 seconds. In Bedrock Edition it grants Regeneration V for 30 seconds, which heals far faster. Both editions also give Absorption, Fire Resistance for 5 minutes, and Resistance for 5 minutes, so it works as a full survival tool, not just a heal.

Beacon

A full-strength beacon can project Regeneration as well. Once you build the maximum four-layer pyramid beneath a beacon, the second power slot unlocks, and Regeneration is one of the choices. It gives Regeneration I to every player inside the beacon’s range and keeps refreshing as long as you stay nearby. That makes a beacon the only way to hold the effect indefinitely without drinking or eating anything.

Which source to use when

The four sources aren’t interchangeable. A brewed potion is your steady option: cheap once you have a ghast tear, long-lasting, and throwable as a splash. Keep a few for drawn-out fights and for topping off between mining trips.

Golden apples are your panic button. The heal is short but instant to trigger, and the Absorption hearts give you a cushion the moment you bite in. Enchanted golden apples take the same idea further, with a longer heal and a stack of defensive effects for the worst moments. A beacon sits apart from all of them: no inventory cost, no timer to watch, just steady slow healing anywhere inside its range.

How Regeneration stacks and overlaps

You can only run one Regeneration effect at a time, and the level decides what happens when a second one lands. Drink a stronger Regeneration while a weaker one is still ticking, and the stronger level takes over. Apply a weaker or equal level and you refresh the timer without dropping your heal rate. There’s no point drinking two of the same potion back to back, since you only reset the clock rather than stacking the speed.

Status effects also travel with you between dimensions. A Regeneration potion you drink in the Overworld keeps ticking after you step through a Nether portal, so timing a drink right before a portal trip isn’t wasted.

Regeneration vs. natural healing

Minecraft already heals you on its own when your hunger bar is high enough. That natural healing and the Regeneration effect are two separate systems, and they run at the same time.

Natural healing only kicks in when your food level sits at 18 (nine drumsticks) or above, and it burns through hunger as it works. The Regeneration effect ignores your hunger completely. It heals you even when your food bar is nearly empty, which is exactly why it’s so valuable when you get caught out with nothing to eat.

What it won’t do is outrun heavy damage. If you’re standing in lava or taking hits faster than the effect can heal, Regeneration I or II won’t keep up. It closes small gaps fast, not big ones.

Using Regeneration on mobs and other players

Regeneration isn’t only for you. A splash or lingering Potion of Regeneration applies the effect to any player or mob caught in the cloud. That gives you a fast way to heal a tamed wolf, a horse, or another player in multiplayer.

There’s a catch worth remembering. Unlike Instant Health, which hurts undead mobs like zombies and skeletons, Regeneration heals them like any other mob. If you splash it near a zombie mid-fight, you’ll top the zombie back up, so aim with care.

Tips and common mistakes

  • Save enchanted golden apples for real emergencies. They stack, so carry a few for boss fights or deep cave dives instead of eating them casually.
  • Throw a splash Potion of Regeneration at the ground under your feet to catch the cloud yourself, or at an ally or pet wolf to heal them from range.
  • Regeneration doesn’t cut incoming damage. Pair it with Resistance or a shield when the hits are coming in hard.
  • Don’t lean on it while starving. If your hunger hits zero, starvation damage ticks against you, and low-level Regeneration may only break even.
  • Higher levels heal more per second, so a short Regeneration II burst can restore more health than a long Regeneration I effect if the fight ends quickly.

Frequently asked questions

Does Regeneration work when your hunger is empty?

Yes. The Regeneration effect heals you no matter your food level, which is the opposite of natural healing. If your hunger is at zero, though, starvation damage works against you at the same time.

Can Regeneration and natural healing happen at once?

They can. They’re separate systems, so with a full hunger bar and the effect active, you heal from both sources together.

What’s the fastest Regeneration in Minecraft?

Regeneration V heals half a heart every 3 ticks, a little more than six times a second. You get it from the enchanted golden apple in Bedrock Edition.

Does Regeneration heal you enough to survive lava?

No. Fire and lava deal damage faster than Regeneration I or II can heal, and lava keeps you burning after you climb out. Fire Resistance is the effect you want there.

How do you brew a Potion of Regeneration?

Brew a ghast tear into an Awkward Potion using a brewing stand. Redstone dust extends the duration, and glowstone dust raises it to Regeneration II.

Does Regeneration stack with a golden apple’s effect?

Not as two separate boosts. A golden apple gives Regeneration II, so if you already have a lower level running, the apple’s level II takes over. If you have something stronger active, the apple’s Absorption still applies, but its Regeneration waits behind the stronger effect.

Is the enchanted golden apple still craftable?

No. It was craftable in older versions, but that recipe was removed. Now you only find it in generated loot chests.

The short version

If you play a lot of survival, keep a stack of golden apples and a few brewed Regeneration potions in your ender chest. The potions cover long fights and the apples cover the sudden ones, and between them you’ll rarely get caught with an empty health bar and no way to fill it.
