The shulker is a box-shaped mob that hides inside a purple shell, sticks to a block, and waits. You’ll only find it in end cities, out on the outer islands of the End, and it guards the best portable storage in the game. Every shulker box starts with this mob: two shulker shells and a chest make one box, and shulkers are the only source of shells.
Fighting one feels different from any other mob fight. The shell deflects arrows when closed, the mob teleports when it takes damage, and its bullets make you float up into the air. That last part is the real danger. The levitation wears off, and gravity handles the rest.

What is a shulker?
Shulker is short for “shell lurker,” and the name describes its whole strategy. Closed, it looks almost identical to a purpur block. End cities are built from purpur, so a wall can be watching you and you won’t know until part of it opens. The mob has 30 health (15 hearts) and never wanders. It attaches to a solid surface (floor, wall, or ceiling) and stays put.
When a player comes within about 16 blocks, the shulker opens its shell, takes aim, and fires. Between shots it snaps shut again. The closed shell works like heavy armor: it grants the mob 20 armor points, and projectiles bounce off it outright. The reliable window to hurt a shulker is while the shell is open.
Shulkers also relocate. If one takes a hit, or the block under it disappears, it can teleport a short distance to a new surface nearby. This is what makes the fight annoying in practice. You land one good hit, and the mob reappears on the ceiling behind you.
Where to find shulkers
Shulkers spawn in end cities, the tall purpur towers that generate on the outer islands of the End. Reaching them takes a few steps:
- Defeat the ender dragon on the central End island.
- Throw an ender pearl into the end gateway that appears after the fight. It teleports you to the outer islands.
- Travel between islands until you find an end city. Bridging with cheap blocks works, ender pearls cross gaps faster, and an elytra makes every later trip trivial.
Inside a city, shulkers sit on walls, in stairwells, and around loot rooms. Check ceilings before you climb. End ships, the floating vessels that generate beside some cities, carry shulkers too, including one parked near the elytra item frame.
Two things set shulkers apart from normal hostile mobs: they never despawn, and they never respawn on their own. Each city holds a fixed number of them. Once you clear it, it stays clear unless you breed more through duplication, which is covered below.
How shulker attacks work
An open shulker fires a shulker bullet every few seconds. The bullet is slow, and it doesn’t fly straight at you. It drifts along the grid in right-angle turns, tracking you like a guided missile with a strange sense of direction. It can follow you around corners, but it breaks the moment it touches a block, so solid cover shuts it down.
When a bullet connects, two things happen. You take 4 damage (2 hearts), and you get the Levitation effect for 10 seconds. Levitation lifts you steadily upward, around nine blocks over its full duration. Then it ends, and you fall. Next to a 40-block purpur tower, that fall does far more damage than the shulker ever will.
The bullets themselves are fragile. A sword swing knocks one out of the air, and so does an arrow. A shield is even better: blocking a bullet negates the damage and the levitation in one motion.
How to fight a shulker
The fight has a rhythm. Wait for the shell to open, hit hard, deal with the teleport, repeat. A few habits make it much easier.
Lead with a shield
Hold the shield up while you close the distance. Every blocked bullet is damage and levitation you didn’t take. Once you’re in melee range, drop the shield only when the shell opens, land your hit, and raise it again.
Time your hits to the shell
Hitting a closed shulker mostly wastes durability. The 20 armor points soak the bulk of your damage, and arrows ping off entirely. Watch for the shell to lift, then commit. A strong sword kills in a few open-shell windows; a bow works too, as long as you shoot while it’s open.
Use levitation instead of fighting it
If a bullet tags you anyway, don’t flail. Steer your float toward a platform, a rooftop, or any surface you can land on. Skilled players let shulkers lift them up tall towers on purpose, since it beats building a staircase. If you’d rather cancel the effect, a bucket of milk clears it instantly. Just remember that milk also wipes your other buffs, and pick your moment so you don’t start falling over a void gap.
Bring slow falling potions
A potion of slow falling is the single best insurance item for end city raids. It turns the post-levitation drop from lethal to harmless, and it also covers pearl throws and elytra mistakes. Two or three potions cover a whole city.
Track the teleports
A damaged shulker often blinks to a nearby surface, and it favors spots you aren’t looking at. When one vanishes, check the ceiling first, then behind you. Its new position is always within a few blocks of the old one, so it hasn’t gone far.
Drops: shulker shells and what to craft
In Java Edition, a shulker has a 50 percent chance to drop one shulker shell. Looting adds 6.25 percent per level, so Looting III pushes the odds to just under 69 percent. In Bedrock Edition you’re luckier: shulkers there always drop a shell. Each kill also gives 5 experience.
Shells exist for one recipe. Place a chest in the middle of the crafting grid with a shulker shell above it and another below it, and you get a shulker box. The box holds 27 slots and keeps its contents when broken, so you can pack it, mine it, and carry the whole thing in a single inventory slot. Dye it any of the 16 colors to keep your storage system readable.
A full set of boxes takes a while to earn. Filling every slot of your inventory with shulker boxes takes 72 shells, which is why players eventually stop raiding cities and start farming.
Shulker duplication and farming
Since version 1.17, shulker shells are renewable. When a shulker takes a hit from another shulker’s bullet, it has a chance to spawn a copy of itself on a nearby surface. Two shulkers provoked into shooting each other will multiply over time, and that mechanic powers every modern shulker farm.
The usual farm design locks one shulker in a chamber, then positions a second shulker (players often ferry one over in a boat, since shulkers can be picked up by boats and minecarts) so that stray bullets hit the first. New shulkers appear, get funneled into a kill zone, and drop shells into hoppers. Designs vary a lot by version, so match any tutorial to your edition and update before you build.
If a farm sounds like overkill, raiding works fine. With a Looting III sword in Java, ten shulkers average around seven shells, so two or three cities usually fund your first several boxes.
Tips and common mistakes
- Never fight a shulker while standing over open void. One bullet, ten seconds of floating, and the fall ends the run. Fight from enclosed rooms and bridges with rails of blocks.
- Clear the shulkers around a loot room before you open chests. Getting levitated mid-looting scatters you away from the good stuff and usually into more bullets.
- Don’t burn your ender pearls early. Save a few for the trip home or for escaping a bad float.
- Craft your first shulker box inside the city. City chests hold plenty of loot, and boxing it on the spot beats making two trips.
- Snowballs and eggs break bullets in flight. They cost nothing, and throwing one beats taking a hit when your shield is on cooldown from an axe.
- If you fight near the end ship, watch the gap between the ship and the dock. Bullets love to knock players into exactly that hole.
Java vs. Bedrock differences
The mob behaves the same way in both editions: same health, same bullets, same levitation. The difference that matters is the drop. Java gives a 50 percent base shell chance, improved by Looting, while Bedrock drops a shell from every kill. Bedrock players can gear up with boxes after one city; Java players should bring a Looting III sword or plan a second raid.
