They sit on the surface, but the canopy usually swallows them in leaves, vines, and tall trees, which makes them easy to walk straight past. Part of the pyramid often clips into a hillside or sinks into uneven ground, so you might only see one mossy wall poking out of the green.
The whole structure is built from cobblestone and mossy cobblestone, with chiseled stone brick decoration inside and vines hanging off the outer walls. That gray stone is the thing to look for. It is the only hard edge in a biome that is otherwise all curves and foliage.
How to find a jungle pyramid
Jungle is already one of the rarer overworld biomes, and the pyramids inside it are not thick on the ground, so finding one by wandering can eat up real time. A few habits speed it up:
- Climb a tall tree or pillar up a few blocks to get above the canopy. The gray cobblestone stands out against the green once you can see over the leaves.
- Clear leaves with a sword or shears as you move. Dense foliage hides walls that would otherwise be obvious from ten blocks away.
- Follow the terrain downhill. Pyramids often generate on lower ground, near water or ravines cutting through the jungle.

Along one of the lower corridors you will find a tripwire stretched across the floor, connected to tripwire hooks on the walls. Behind the wall sit dispensers loaded with arrows. Walk into the tripwire, or snap the string by hand, and the dispensers open fire.
To disarm it, cut the string with shears instead of walking through it, or break one of the tripwire hooks. Shears stop the trip signal from ever firing. Once the wire is dead, you can grab the chest tucked near the dispensers with no risk. Some players just sprint through and eat the arrows, since the hit is rarely fatal with a bit of armor on, but shears are the clean way to do it.
The lever puzzle
The second chest sits behind a redstone puzzle: three levers mounted on a mossy cobblestone wall, wired through redstone to sticky pistons. Flipping the levers shifts the pistons, and the intended solution slides them out of the way to open a small alcove holding the chest.
Here is the plain truth about the puzzle. Almost nobody solves it as designed. The redstone is fiddly, and the payoff for cracking the combination is the exact same chest you can reach by simply mining through the wall next to the levers. If you want the loot fast, dig straight through the cobblestone and take the chest. Pulling the wrong lever combination does no damage, so there is no penalty for poking at it either if you enjoy the puzzle for its own sake.
Jungle pyramid loot
Between the two chests, a jungle pyramid can hold some genuinely useful early-game gear. The loot is randomized, so no two pyramids drop the same haul, but the pool pulls from:
- Diamonds, on a small chance and usually just one or two
- Emeralds
- Iron and gold ingots
- Iron, gold, and diamond horse armor
- Saddles
- Enchanted books
- Bamboo
- Bones and rotten flesh, the common filler
The horse armor is the real draw. Diamond horse armor cannot be crafted in survival at all, so a jungle pyramid is one of the handful of places you can actually get it. If you plan to travel by horse, the pyramid chests earn the trip on their own.
The two chests draw from the same loot pool, so it is worth opening both before you judge your haul. One might hand you rotten flesh and bones while the other holds the diamond horse armor. - Bring shears. They disarm the tripwire cleanly and also cut through the leaves choking the outside of the temple.
- Do not tunnel in blind. The arrow dispensers hide behind walls, and punching into the wrong block can set them off. Find the tripwire first and work out where the dispensers are.
- Keep the dispensers. Once the trap is disarmed, you can mine the dispensers themselves and pocket them along with the arrows still inside. Free redstone hardware.
- Check for the second chest. Players often loot the puzzle chest and leave without finding the trap chest, or the reverse. There are always two.
- Light it up if you plan to stick around. The interior is dark enough for mobs to spawn on you while you dig.
- Watch your step near the tripwire corridor. It is easy to backpedal into the string while lining up a shot at a dispenser, which sets off the very trap you were trying to avoid.

The pyramid itself is nearly identical on both editions: same cobblestone build, same two traps, same two chests, same jungle-only spawning.
