Updated for Java Edition 26.3 (October 2026).

Abandoned camps are small campsites with tents, chests and barrels, added in Java Edition 26.3 (Wilderness Bound). They generate in 18 forest, taiga, jungle and savanna-type biomes, each with its own design, and they are common: in our sample of 300 Java 26.3 seeds, the nearest camp was a median 416 blocks from spawn. Their chests hold explorer maps, copper gear and sometimes diamonds.

Type Overworld surface structure
Biomes Forest, birch forest, old growth birch forest, flower forest, dappled forest, windswept forest, meadow, cherry grove, taiga, snowy taiga, old growth spruce taiga, old growth pine taiga, sparse jungle, bamboo jungle, swamp, savanna, wooded badlands, pale garden
Distance from spawn Nearest camp a median 416 blocks away; at least one within 1,000 blocks in 95% of seeds (our sample)
How many On average 3 camps within 1,000 blocks of spawn and 12 within 2,000 (our sample)
Loot Barrels, a chest and what the game calls a “secret” chest: supplies, copper gear, explorer maps, ingots, potions, diamonds
Locate command /locate structure #minecraft:abandoned_camp
Added in Java Edition 26.3 (Wilderness Bound, September 15, 2026); Bedrock Edition 26.50

Where abandoned camps generate

Camps generate in 18 biomes, and each of those biomes has its own version of the camp, built to match its surroundings. Some pieces are shared by all versions. Because forests are so common, most camps you find will be the forest design. This is how the 8,176 camps within 3,000 blocks of spawn in our sample split by design:

Camp design (biome) Share of camps
Forest 35.6%
Savanna 11.8%
Taiga 10.3%
Snowy taiga 6.7%
Birch forest 6.3%
Old growth birch forest 6.2%
Sparse jungle 4.4%
Meadow 3.5%
Swamp 2.9%
The other 9 designs 2.0% or less each; rarest are cherry grove (0.8%), windswept forest (0.6%) and pale garden (0.6%)

How to find an abandoned camp

You usually don’t have to go far. In our sample, 95% of seeds had a camp within 1,000 blocks of spawn, and there were 12 camps within 2,000 blocks on average. Explore any forest, taiga or savanna near spawn and you will likely walk into one. If you want a specific design, find that biome first: a cherry grove or pale garden camp only appears in those biomes.

These three Java 26.3 seeds have a camp right next to spawn. Each position was checked with our seed map engine, and the map links open with the Abandoned Camp layer turned on.

In your own world, /locate structure #minecraft:abandoned_camp (cheats on) finds the nearest camp of any design. Without cheats, open the seed map, enter your seed, pick version 26.3 and turn on the Abandoned Camp layer. These are Java seeds and positions; Bedrock worlds from the same number are different.

Abandoned camp loot

Camps have three kinds of containers, each with its own loot table:

Container What it can hold
Barrels 4 to 8 camp supplies, such as bread, wheat, leather, rabbit hide, string, coal, arrows, candles, a cushion or a straw bed, plus one bundle, wooden axe or fishing rod
Chest 4 to 6 odds and ends (a compass, maps, a lead, a saddle, gunpowder, flint and steel, a bundle), two pieces of gear (a bow, copper armor or copper weapons, a spyglass, shears or a bucket) and one map to another abandoned camp
Secret chest Diamonds or potions, 4 to 6 iron, gold or copper ingots or maps, sometimes an iron axe, spear or armor piece, and one explorer map to a bigger structure

The secret chest is the one worth hunting for. Its explorer map leads to one of seven structures: an ancient city, trial chambers, a mineshaft, a desert pyramid, a jungle pyramid, warm ocean ruins or a woodland mansion. The map in the regular chest leads to another camp, in one of eight designs: bamboo jungle, cherry grove, birch forest, dappled forest, flower forest, pale garden, swamp or windswept forest.

Straw beds and cushions

Two other Wilderness Bound items fit camp life, and both can turn up in camp barrels. A straw bed lets you sleep through one night without setting your spawn point, and then it is used up; it doesn’t work in the Nether or the End. Three hay bales craft four of them. A cushion is a seat you can place on any flat surface and sit on; three wool slabs of one color craft one.

How we measured

The numbers on this page come from our own seed map engine, running Java Edition 26.3 world generation. For 300 random seeds we listed every abandoned camp within 3,000 blocks of world spawn that passes the game’s biome check, 8,176 camps in total, and recorded the nearest one and the biome design of each. The loot lists come from the game’s 26.3 loot tables, and the seeds above were picked from the same run. Source for the structure and items: the official Java Edition 26.3 release notes.
