Updated for Java Edition 26.3 (October 2026).
The dappled forest is a new Overworld forest of poplar trees with red, orange and yellow leaves, added in Java Edition 26.3 (Wilderness Bound) on September 15, 2026, and in Bedrock Edition 26.50. It generates near cold biomes and is uncommon: in our sample of 300 Java 26.3 seeds it covered 0.44% of the surface. Come for poplar wood, shelf mushrooms and an abandoned camp.
| Dimension | Overworld |
|---|---|
| Where it generates | Near cold biomes, usually bordering rivers, plains and cherry groves |
| How common | 0.44% of the surface in our sample (about 1 block in 230) |
| Distance from spawn | Median 1,452 blocks; within 1,000 blocks in 32% of seeds, within 2,000 in 69% (our sample) |
| Mobs | Sheep, chickens, cows, pigs, rabbits and foxes (cold variants), plus the usual hostile mobs at night |
| Notable blocks | Poplar trees (red, orange and yellow leaves), fallen poplars, shelf mushrooms, red shrubs, leaf litter |
| Structures | Abandoned camps (dappled forest design) |
| Climate | Temperature 0.6, downfall 0.6 |

Is the dappled forest out yet?
Yes. It arrived in the Wilderness Bound drop: Java Edition 26.3, released on September 15, 2026, and Bedrock Edition 26.50. Any world can find it in chunks generated with 26.3 or later; areas you already explored in an older version stay as they were, so head into new terrain to find one.
How rare is the dappled forest?
Uncommon, but not hard to reach. In our sample it covered 0.44% of the surface, a little less than a meadow (0.60%). The nearest one was a median 1,452 blocks from spawn: about a third of seeds had one within 1,000 blocks and 69% within 2,000. Every one of the 300 seeds had one within 5,000 blocks.
How to find a dappled forest
Mojang describes it as a forest found near cold biomes. In our sample its edges most often touched a river (36%), plains (31%), a cherry grove (6%), a beach (6%) or a cold ocean (5%). Follow rivers through cool, open country and watch for the autumn colors: the orange grass and red-to-yellow canopy are hard to miss from a distance.

These three Java 26.3 seeds have a dappled forest close to spawn. Each coordinate is inside the biome, checked at block level.

What you find in a dappled forest
Poplar trees and poplar wood
Poplars are the new tree, in three leaf colors: red, orange and yellow, each with falling leaves to match. Poplar leaves drop poplar saplings, and a sapling grows into any of the three colors at random, so you can’t pick the shade you get. The trunks are poplar logs, which craft into a full new set of poplar wood blocks. If you have no dappled forest nearby, the wandering trader sometimes sells poplar saplings. Fallen poplar trees lie on the forest floor too, and leaf litter collects around the standing ones.
Shelf mushrooms
Shelf mushrooms grow on the sides of poplars and fallen poplars, in a small and a large size. Bone meal turns a small one into a large one, and a large one drops two shelf mushrooms when broken. They work like any other mushroom in stews; since 26.3, mushroom stew and suspicious stew take any two mushrooms. They are also slightly bouncy, like a bed, so a stack of them makes a soft landing.
Red shrubs
Red shrubs grow in small patches across the forest floor. They are decorative, they go in a composter, and bone meal makes a new shrub grow in an empty space next to one.
Mobs
Sheep, chickens, cows, pigs, rabbits and foxes spawn here, and the farm animals use their cold variants. At night the usual hostile mobs spawn, as in any forest.
Abandoned camps
The dappled forest has its own abandoned camp design. Camps are common in general: in our sample the nearest camp of any kind was a median 416 blocks from spawn. The dappled forest version is rarer simply because the biome is: 1.3% of the camps in our sample used it. Camp chests can also hold an explorer map that leads to another camp, and one of those maps points to a dappled forest camp.
How we measured
The numbers on this page come from our own seed map engine, running Java Edition 26.3 world generation. We generated 300 random seeds and sampled every 16th block across a 10,240 by 10,240 block square centered on each world’s spawn. “How common” is the biome’s share of those samples; “distance from spawn” is how far the nearest sample of the biome was. The camp figures come from every abandoned camp within 3,000 blocks of spawn on the same 300 seeds. The seeds above were picked from the same run, and each coordinate was re-checked at block level.
