Pillager outpost in Minecraft: loot, mobs, and Bad Omen

What is a pillager outpost?

A pillager outpost is a tall watchtower guarded by pillagers, the crossbow-wielding illagers that raid villages. It generates in the Overworld, usually out in the open where you can spot the tower from a distance. The structure marks pillager territory, and the mobs around it shoot at you, any villager, or an iron golem on sight.

The outpost is one of the few structures in the game that keeps spawning hostile mobs after you find it. Clear the pillagers and more show up over time, which makes the outpost useful as a crossbow and experience farm once you understand how it works.

If you are new to it, an outpost is worth a careful visit even early in a world. There is a free crossbow in the tower, a chance at a rare mob in a cage, and a captain whose death sets up a village raid on your schedule.

Where pillager outposts spawn

Outposts generate in the same biomes that villages use: plains, sunflower plains, meadow, desert, savanna, snowy plains, taiga, and snowy taiga. You will not find one in an ocean, a jungle, or the Nether.

The game spaces outposts apart and keeps them a short distance from villages, so an outpost sitting within sight of a village is common. The watchtower rises several blocks above the ground, so the quickest way to find one is to travel across open terrain and watch the horizon. Because they land in flat, visible biomes, they are easier to spot than most structures.

Each world seed places outposts in fixed spots, so if you look one up for your seed it will always be there. Most players still stumble onto them while exploring for a village, since the two share the same terrain. If you find a village but no outpost, ride out a few hundred blocks in an open direction and scan the skyline again.

The structure and what is inside

The centerpiece is a watchtower built from cobblestone and dark oak. It stands a few floors tall, with open platforms where pillagers keep watch. At the top you will find a single chest that holds the outpost’s loot.

Around the base, an outpost can generate extra features: small tents, a stack of logs, a crafting spot, practice targets, and wooden cages. Some cages hold an allay trapped inside. Break the cage to free it. Freeing an allay is worth the trip on its own, since allays gather matching items for you and are otherwise hard to find.

Outpost chest loot

The chest at the top of the tower can contain:

  • A crossbow
  • Iron ingots
  • Dark oak logs
  • Wheat, carrots, and potatoes
  • Arrows and string
  • Tripwire hooks
  • An enchanted book, on the rarer rolls

The crossbow and the enchanted book are the real draws. Early on, a free crossbow saves you the iron and string it would take to craft one, and the food helps if you traveled a long way to reach the tower.

How the outpost spawns pillagers

As long as the tower stands and a player is within range, the outpost spawns pillagers in the area around it. They appear no matter the light level, so torches and lanterns will not shut the spawns down the way they stop most hostile mobs. That is by design: the outpost is meant to stay dangerous.

Pillagers themselves are aggressive and do not burn in daylight, so the outpost stays a threat around the clock. They target you, villagers, wandering traders, and iron golems, and they keep their distance while firing, which is what makes a shield so useful. A few can also appear as roaming patrols away from the outpost, but the tower is where they gather in numbers.

New pillagers arrive in bursts up to a cap inside the outpost’s area, then pause until the count drops. If you clear the guards and wait nearby, more come. That loop is what makes an outpost farmable if you want to build for it.

The captain and Bad Omen

Most outposts spawn with a captain: a pillager carrying a dark banner on its head. That banner is the ominous banner, and you can pick it up and hang it as a decoration in your own builds. It only drops from a captain, so this is the clean way to get one without crafting it block by block.

Killing the captain has a side effect. In current versions (Minecraft 1.21 and later), the captain drops an Ominous Bottle, and drinking that bottle gives you the Bad Omen effect. In versions before 1.21, killing the captain applies Bad Omen the moment it dies, with no bottle involved.

Bad Omen matters because of what happens next. Walk into a village while the effect is active and it starts a raid: waves of pillagers, vindicators, and other illagers attack the village. Raids are hard, but they drop strong loot and are the main source of totems of undying, so an outpost captain is often the first step in a planned raid.

Tips for taking on an outpost

Bring a shield. Pillager crossbows hit hard at range, and a shield blocks the bolts while you close the gap. Approach from cover or from higher ground so you are not standing in the open against three or four crossbows at once.

Pack a few blocks or a water bucket if you plan to reach the top chest. The tower’s open floors make it easy to get knocked off, and a bucket lets you drop down safely once you have the loot. Deal with the captain on your own timing: leave it alive if you are not ready for Bad Omen, or take it out first and drink the effect when you actually want the raid.

If you want the outpost gone for good, the fix players rely on is tearing down the tower. Because the spawns ignore light, lighting the area up does nothing. Remove the structure, or move your base far enough away that the outpost stops loading.

Using an outpost as a farm

Since the tower keeps producing pillagers, some players wall off a safe spot near it and collect crossbows, arrows, and experience from the steady stream of mobs. A simple version funnels the pillagers into a drop or a one-block gap where you can hit them safely.

A build like this takes some planning and a little redstone, so treat it as a mid-game project rather than a first-day job. The payoff is a reliable experience source and a stack of crossbows you can repair with or break down for parts.

If a full farm is more than you want, you can still treat the outpost as a repeatable stop. Swing by every so often, clear the guards for their drops, and check whether a new captain has spawned for another banner or bottle. The chest only fills once, but the mobs keep coming back, so an outpost near your base stays useful long after the first visit.

Frequently asked questions

What biomes do pillager outposts spawn in?

The same biomes as villages: plains, sunflower plains, meadow, desert, savanna, taiga, snowy plains, and snowy taiga. They sit on open, flat land, which makes the tower easy to see from a distance.

How do I get the ominous banner?

Kill the outpost captain, the pillager with the banner on its head, and the banner drops for you to pick up. It is the only way to get that exact banner without building one yourself.

Do pillager outposts respawn pillagers?

Yes. As long as the tower stands and you are within range, new pillagers spawn over time, up to a cap. Clearing them out and waiting nearby brings the next batch.

What is in the pillager outpost chest?

The top-floor chest can hold a crossbow, iron ingots, dark oak logs, wheat, carrots, potatoes, arrows, string, tripwire hooks, and sometimes an enchanted book.

How do I stop pillagers from spawning?

Lighting the area will not work, since outpost spawns ignore light level. The reliable fix is to remove the tower. Moving your base far enough away also keeps the outpost from loading and spawning mobs.

Are there allays at pillager outposts?

Sometimes. Outposts can generate with wooden cages that hold an allay. Break the cage to free it. This is one of only two places allays turn up naturally, the other being woodland mansions.

Does killing the captain always give Bad Omen?

In current versions the captain drops an Ominous Bottle, and drinking it gives Bad Omen. In versions before 1.21, the effect lands the moment the captain dies. Either way, entering a village with Bad Omen triggers a raid.

Worth the stop

An outpost pays off even in a young world: a free crossbow, a possible allay, and a captain who sets up a raid whenever you decide you are ready. Clear it with a shield up, grab the banner, and choose your own moment to carry Bad Omen into the nearest village.
